ToyCon 2018: My Toy Exhibit and the Neal Adams experience

So ToyCon 2018 finally ended and it's time to rest up our wallet and take account on the damage it has done to our collection budget. ToyCon 2018 was perhaps a better year for me compared to last year's edition because not only have I taken a more active part in contributing to its toy collection show case but I also got to meet a comic book legend, Neal Adams himself. More details about the epic meet and greet will be detailed below. ToyCon 2018's guest celebrities however were a bit underwhelming for myself. Of course for me, nothing beats ToyCon 2016 because the organizers brought in DEAN CAIN, and being a huge Superman fan, well... you connect the dots. The 2016 edition also enticed me well enough that I had to spend for a Legendary pass which costs at a stunning P10,000 ($200) with all the freebies that came with the ticket. It is also sad that perhaps their biggest celebrity for ToyCon 2018, David Jason Frank (Tommy the Green Ranger of Power Rangers Fame) was a no show for the event. I actually considered getting a VIP ticket behind the strength of Frank's appearance, but the freebies were not of my taste. Other celebrities like Kelly Hu (Lady Deathstrike from the movie X-men 2) and Dante Basco (RUFIO! from the movie Hook) were not strong considerations enough for me to get a VIP pass. I guess ToyCon can only get my money if they get a Superman related celebrity to come to their future events. Well that's just me and I really would love to see Teri Hatcher, Tom Welling, Kristin Kreuk, or even the Superboys Gerard Christopher or John Haymes Newton in the future events to come. But I'm sure a lot of other people got a hell of a time by meeting their celebrity idols that ToyCon 2018 brought this year. And you could clearly see that judging by the look on the faces lining up on the main stage hall.

THE TOY EXHIBIT

DC Universe PH Toy Display with Roderick's Deadshot collection
ToyCon 2018 marked the first time I showcased some of my collections in their Toy Display hall. I always have been reluctant to volunteer on toy exhibits because of all the hassle of transporting your stuffs and going through the ingress and egress during the beginning and the end of the event. Also considering that I live far away from the event venue. But the people behind DC Universe PH (the FACEBOOK group where I proudly belong to and which I would like to invite you guys to join) were great inspirations in convincing myself that sometimes you just have to be selfless and sacrifice a little bit for the betterment of the Philippine Toy Community. Shout out to Eric Cruz, Frederick Tinio, Tenten Chua, Nelson Wu, and Jeffrey Velasquez for the excellent effort in revamping and breathing fresh life to our DC Facebook group. It is not easy to maintain and manage a group especially if all of us are juggling our time between family, work, and other important stuffs in our lives. And Eric and Fred are veterans of this hobby, you'd be impressed at their dedication and love for the hobby. Now, for this year's ToyCon edition, we decided to come up with a theme where we would celebrate the fandom of the DC Universe by presenting the various media platforms highlighting the best of what these platforms had to offer. Of course by utilizing action figures as the display base, we presented the greatest of what the DC Universe had to offer from comic books, animated series, and live action TV and Movie series.

Nelson Wu presented the greatest universe altering event in the history of comic books by re-enacting the CRISIS of INFINITE EARTHS with the Mattel DC Universe Classics toyline as the base action figures. Mattel's DCUC Classics is one of the most successful toylines that DC has to offer. The wide range of DC Characters that appeared in this action figure series is quite overwhelming that one could even nearly build an entire DC Universe by collecting this toyline alone. This represents the DC Comic book print media platform.

I on the other hand dusted off my 5 inch DC action figures ranging from Kenner's Classic Super Powers (with an assist from Fredrick as I don't own a Batman and Robin, Martian Manhunter, and the rare Cyborg action figures) and Total Justice Toyline, to Mattel's recent efforts on Justice League Unlimited, The Batman, and Batman Brave and the Bold. This highlights DC's rich animated history in the small screen. I mean whoever never came across the classic legendary Superfriends cartoon series? Even your sisters and cousins who were more into Rainbow Brite and Little Ponies surely knew about this cartoon series. The Total Justice toyline on the other hand is an extension of the comic book representation as this was the 90's age where our DC Superheroes were more grittier to keep in the times of the 90's gritty comic book stories. For more of the evolution of these toylines you could visit my post here.

Lastly, Jeffrey Velasquez brought in the DC Live Action and Videogame representation of the DC Universe multimedia platform. By using the more modern action figure sculpts done by toy companies NECA and DC Collectibles, Jeff showcased in his display the Iconic Christopher Reeve Superman and Michael Keaton Batman. Two of the most successful live action comic book movies ever that paved the way for future comic book movies. These two were the benchmark for Marvel to not give up on the comic book movie genre. Because without both of them, we would never have experienced the Marvel Cinematic Universe (wink wink). The Arrowverse meanwhile represented the small screen media. The Arrowverse is made up of four T.V. series, namely, Supergirl, The Flash, DC Legends of Tomorrow, and Arrow. This universe is called Arrowverse because it is Arrow's success (the title of the Green Arrow T.V. seeries) which paved the way for future DC superhero TV series to be developed. Marvel even joined the act by coming up with their own Superhero T.V. series. Lastly, DC's Batman: Arkham video game series were also included as it represents the video game media platform for this display. The Batman Arkham series spawned multiple sequels to the point that it even exists in its own universe. Video game junkies I guess just couldn't get enough of the game.

The people behind DC Universe Philippines.
The people behind the DC Facebook Groups who represented the DC Toy Displays
Of course, the success of the DC Toy Displays wouldn't have been achieved if DC Universe Philippines did it by their lonesome. We were joined in by various DC Facebook Groups who represented specific fandom from the huge DC Universe library. There's The Reign of the Supermen (which I'm also a proud member) headed by Vince Olano and Issa Rollorata, Wonder Woman PH by Tenten Chua and company, Pinoy Batman Kolektors by Ian Cruz and company, DC Toy Collectors by Dennis Lim and company, and Roderick Miravalles who is a huge Deadshot fan. There are some other groups I couldn't remember but give me a shoutout and introduce yourselves. The people behind these groups are amazing people, and I could feel the camaraderie during Ingress, Egress, and my whole time there as we helped each other out regardless of affiliations and other what not. I think it is very important in this hobby that we should not lost track on the ideals of our superheroes and focus on them rather than on ourselves.

THE NEAL ADAMS EXPERIENCE
With Neal Adams
So who is Neal Adams? Casual comic book fans may not know him as he is not that big as a media star as Stan Lee but that does not diminish his Legend one bit. Neal Adams is the guy responsible for bringing the DEFINITIVE DC Comics imagery of DC Characters Batman and Green Arrow. But his Legend is more attributed to his championing of the comic book creator rights, bearing fruit the legal battle won by the heirs of Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster against DC Comics. He is one of the leading reasons why every time we read or watch our favorite comic book heroes, the creator's name is always emblazoned during the credits scene. While he is also more identified with Batman and Green Arrow, he had his share of works handling the other DC Supehero characters, most notably Superman. He was the artist behind the intergalactic clash between Superman and Muhammad Ali. His Superman covers and interior art back in the bronze age were one of the best, arguably surpassing those of Gil Kane and Curt Swan. His recent Superman mini series The Coming of the Supermen also looked quite good when compared to the modern contemporary artists. So with that, there is no other comic book I wanted autographed but a Superman comic book. Neal actually insisted to the organizers that every Toy Con goer should be allowed to get one free autographs for him. How cool is that?

Relating his tale about Superman's iconic Red Trunks
Neal was also selling art prints for him to autograph for interested con goers. I really wanted to get the iconic Kryptonite Nevermore cover art print but to my surprise it sold out. Every one of his Superman art print sold out! I also had a nice chitchat with him as I told him how I was a fan of his work during his time with Continuity Comics. He told me that I should watch out for its return later this year. My comrades at The Reign of the Supermen, Vince, Issa, and I also engaged Mr. Adams in a discussion about our Superman fandom and we were surprised that he related to us his personal thoughts about Superman's missing red trunks and its return. He told us that he was against DC's removing of Superman's red trunks at first. But he eventually grew on it. But to his horror, in a recent San Diego Comic Con event, two Superman cosplayers approached him while he was seated on his table wearing the trunkless Superman costume and to his ghastly surprise, his eyes were fixed across those dudes "junk". It happened the whole day with Superman cosplayers approaching him for signatures, which led him to pray that DC better return those red trunks back on because he never wanted to see a man's junk ever again during comic book conventions. This tale was hilarious and it cracked me and the group with fits of laughter. On a serious note, Mr. Adams also intimated to us that when reading his books, we should take note on certain details because all of his books are interconnected. And if we come across these and remember them, we'd get a better clear look at the big picture. A legend like Neal Adams was surprisingly down to earth. I guess we are lucky that he visited us here in the Philippines.

HAULS!
I didn't expect that I would spend a good amount of money this Toy Con but there were some items that were too good to pass up. And here are those items.

Neal Adams signed Comic Book
Various Superman comic books
My Post-Crisis Superman comic book collection project is now down to 12 issues. And the hunt has started getting harder and harder each day. This collecting project begins from the John Byrne Man of Steel mini-series down to The Reign of Doomsday, the last book published before the New 52 reboot. There was actually a funny story at a the con when I approached a seller selling Superman comics. A longtime seller/friend told me that they were just talking about me that I was the one who bought all of her Superman comics and that I'm a huge Superman collector. I was surprised by their story. Give me a good laugh as some of the people there got intrigued.

DC Super Powers Steppenwolf
This completes my Kenner Super Powers Apokolips big three, Darkseid, Kalibak, and Steppenwolf.

Witchblade action figures
I've started an Image Comics comic book and action figure project and I finally got a Witchblade action figure at a very affordable price.

DC Origins Versus System
Cryptozoic DC Confrontations Deck Building Game
I also started stocking up on Superhero Board games and Card Games. And my priority was finding a good DC Universe table top game. I want to start bonding with my kids through these table top games. Too much gadget is no longer healthy. We'll need more family bonding time in a competitive and fun atmosphere. Both of these card games were being sold at a very good price. Had to snatch them up before I regret not getting them.

So that's it for Toy Con 2018! Let's see what's in store for next year. Til' then!

HeroCon Updates!

Herbie on display for HeroCon

I'm back with more updates about HeroCon as it kicks off this weekend at SM City Sucat.

Take a photo with Herbie

Herbie, the lovable Volkswagen Beetle from the movie Herbie Fully Loaded makes an appearance at HeroCon as he welcomes those who wants to take photos with him.

Batang X
Taken from Herocon's Facebook Page

"In the 90's Direk Peque Gallaga and Lore Reyes gave us Batang X, after 2 movies and a short spin as a TV series in channel 5 we slowly forgot about them. We believe amidst the problems and calamities we are having, we are reminded of our roots, to harken back and preserve the what's good in our past.

Batang X paved the way to TV/Movie Superheroes taken from DC/Marvel style and adopted it to our culture, making it an instrument to convey messages of hope, unity, patriotism and goodwill to mankind the Filipino way."

With that said, Anna Larrucea and Janus Del Prado will make an appearance in HeroCon. I'm sure a lot of us had a crush on Anna when she played Trina in Batang X as well as other T.V. Appearances. As stated in the HeroCon Facebook Page:

"We are proud to have Anna Larrucea who played Trina in Batang X with us on our Panel with Direk Peque Gallaga and Lore Reyes. She was launched as part of Star Circle Batch 4 and became a mainstay in ABS-CBN TV shows Ang TV (1992-1997), Kaybol (1995), Gimik (1996) and Mula Sa Puso (1997).
She starred in the movie Baby Love (1995) with Jason Salcedo. She did movies such as Batang X (1995) with Aiko Melendez, Magic Temple (1996), Ang TV: The Movie (1996), Batang PX (1997) with Patrick Garcia, Mula Sa Puso: The Movie (1999), Puso ng Pasko (1998), plus Sugatang Puso (2001) starring Lorna Tolentino and Christopher de Leon.

She was nominated for FAMAS Best Child Actress Award in Magic Temple (1996).

She appeared in GMA-7s TV series Hawak Ko Ang Langit (2003) with Assunta de Rossi, and Impostora (2007) starring Iza Calzado and Sunshine Dizon."

Janus del Prado, the child actor who played Control in Batang X will also join her on stage. Here's HeroCon's official statement:

"We are proud to have Janus del Prado who played Control in Batang X with us on our panel with Direk Peque Gallaga and Lore Reyes. He did a lot of shows in ABS-CBN and GMA Network and later focuses on the Kapamilya Network.

Recently we saw him in the ABS CBN Bukas na lang kita Mamahalin and A Beautiful Affair. Also in the Four Sisters and a Wedding, The Reunion and Every Breath you Take to name some."

Peque Gallaga and Lore Reyes, two of the most renowned Filipino Fantasy writers and the creator of Batang X will serve as guest panelist in an effort to inspire young Pinoy fantasy writers to hone their craft and carry on with their creativity.

Award winning actor John Arcilla will also have a guest appearance

Toy photography enthusiasts will also get a chance to vie for top place in the Toy Photography Challenge.

Guest illustrators will also illustrate your favorite heroes for a cause.

Toycon 2012

My Custom Christopher Reeve Superman on the Toycon Poster

Toycon (Toy Convention) fever is once again in the air. And this year's edition is personally the best there is yet. But I'll elaborate on that later. This is my third Toycon experience and so far the event just gets better every year. I had the luxury of getting a free pass for this event because my Custom Christopher Reeve Superman was one of those chosen to be used in the Toycon 2012 poster. As usual, I was only able to join the Toycon on Sunday because I have work on Weekdays and Saturdays. Toycon is the 2nd toy event of the year here in the Philippines and I dare say the most festive among the rest. The organizers always bring the big guns to these events. The three day event features Cosplay Contests, Toys and other Collectibles Seller Booths, Toy Exhibits, Statues, Toy Biddings, Contests, and Musical show events on stage. In this year's Toycon, DC Comics brought Christian Bale's actual Dark Knight Rises Batman costume used in the filming of the latest Batman movie franchise. This served as the main highlight of the event as Toycon goers flocked the movie costume.

This year's Toy exhibits featured as usual an uncanny mix of different collections. I took photos of my favorite exhibits. (Sorry for the crappy pics, I was in a hurry while shooting this.) I think DC is missing in Action. And I didn't notice any Mcfarlane NBA's or Spawn. But I might have unintentionally skipped them.

Comics

Toycon is never complete when there are no comic books for sale. This year, there were a lot of stalls selling back issues and collected editions at a very low price. I didn't indulge myself in comic books this time, picking just a few instead just to whet my appetite. Earlier this year in the Tagcom event, my money was spent mostly on comics, but Toycon usually have more hard to find and rare toys. I reserved my cash for the toy hunt

Toy Sellers Booth

And of course, my favorite booths. I just snapped quick photos of the Toy booths that I came across with. When I reached the venue, there wasn't a groundswell of people yet. I took that opportunity to look around and start my toy hunt. But when afternoon came and with my Toy Hunt over, the venue began to fill up. I was hoping I could snap photos on the booths where I purchased my stuffs. But the swelling number of people made it hard for me to do. Below are the photos of some of the toy booths.

My Toycon Hauls

The Freebies

Batman Comics Freebie

And of course, my Toycon Hauls. I'm calling this my best Toycon ever simply because I managed to get almost all of my existing Toy wish list. As a contributor in the Toycon Poster, I was able to get freebies from the organizers. The freebies consists of a Toycon 2012 Poster Tarp, a Reusable environment friendly Bag, Toycon 2012 Baller, a Dark Knight  Rises mini flashlight Keychain, and a Batman Comics. The poster tarp though did not feature my custom Chris Reeve Superman because the tarp already went into printing when the organizers solicited photos of custom action figures. But Event Organizer Mr. Cholo Mallillin was kind enough to get me one of the posters hanging in the Mall. It's a good keepsake to remind me of my little involvement in the 2012 edition of Toycon. I also got my freebies courtesy of Cholo as he was one of those who chose to use my custom Chris Reeve Superman for the Toycon Poster. I can never thank him enough for being such an accommodating person.

Vintage PBA Action Figures with Glen Rice

This Toycon was a huge surprise for me. Prior to the days leading to Toycon, I was confident that I wouldn't spend much in the Toy Booths because I was looking for figures that are now rare nowadays. I set that as my priority in order for me to cut down on my Toy expenses. But lo and behold A Vintage Milo sponsored PBA (Filipino Basketball League version of the NBA) action figures (with pencil sharpener base) caught my eye when I visited a booth that was selling comics. I used to own a Benjie Paras figure but lost it when it was stolen from me. I also own an Alvin Patrimonio figure but the figure was broken and lost it's arm during one of my playtime when I was younger. So seeing both of them made me ecstatic as I rummaged through a container filled with vintage Action Figures. I actually couldn't contain my excitement when I saw these, I let out a huge smile on my face because now I've completed them again. I've been searching for these two for quite some time. And I'm sure I've seen them during last year's Toycon, I thought somebody already bought them. But to my surprise, they are still available. I quickly snagged them and rummaged more in the same stall because all of a sudden, I had this indescribable feeling that more treasures are in store for me in the container.

My DC Hauls

True enough, I saw a Hasbro JLA Superman (the short haired reissue of the Mullet Haired Kenner Total Justice Superman). I considered my Total Justice Superman as the best Superman figure that I owned before DC Direct and Mattel began producing the highly articulated action figures in the early 2000's. I've been looking for the Hasbro version for ages and the last time I saw one was when I was in Australia. I regrettably didn't buy that figure and was regretting that decision. But seeing him at Toycon made me very happy that I quickly decided to look for more Hasbro JLA figures. The rummaging yielded me Atom, Red Tornado and Zauriel. I also saw Impulse and Superboy but regrettably I didn't get them. I've now almost completed the Kenner Total Justice Line and the Hasbro JLA line. I'm just lacking Black Lighting, Dr. Polaris, Impulse, Superboy, Wonder Woman, Steel, Joker, and Lex Luthor. I've seen all of them at one point in my previous years of toy hunting. Now I'm regretting the fact that I didn't get them before because I though completing this toyline was hopeless. But if this experience is telling me something, I'm sure these figures will pop up soon. I was also ecstatic to find a Toyfair exclusive Eradicator from the Kenner Man of Steel Toyline. I never thought that I would be able to find one because this figure is quite rare and could only be acquired through mail in order from Toyfare Magazine in the U.S. Rounding up my DC hauls are the Batman Begins Ra's Al Ghul, Ducard, DCSH Brainiac, DCUC The Question, an Arkham Asylum boxset Joker with an Aquaman head which I will be using for custom, and a JLU Superman with the Bottled City of Kandor.

Being a Big DC fan, my DC hauls were the crowning jewel of my 2012 Toycon experience. But my Marvel hauls are no slouch either. Because I managed to snag a couple of my most wanted Marvel figures in my wishlist. I've been looking for a Gambit figure that would blend well with my X-Men movie figures for quite some time and every time I see one, I always get outbid. This Toycon, I finally managed to snag one at a very low price. I also purchased a Peter Parker Spiderman for my collection, Vintage White Queen, Spiderman Movie Lizard (from the Toby Maguire Spiderman toyline), Vintage Nova, and a X-Men Movie Rogue in her X-Men Movie uniform. I've also been looking for this Rogue figure for quite some time. I also finally bought the Lizard figure that I missed out last year. I got all of these DC and Marvel figures at an incredibly low price.

Total Justice comic book based on the Kenner toyline

And as my day at the Toycon came to a close, I decided to buy some comic books. Back issue Comic Books lately have been a staple in my Toy Hunts. I limited my Comic book purchase to two collected sets of Justice League stories. The first one is the comic book adaptation of the Kenner Total Justice toyline. I chose to buy this title despite the negative reviews because I'm a huge fan of the toyline. And during this Toycon, I was on a Total Justice merchandise hunting mode because of the Total Justice related figures that I acquired at this event. The other title I bought is the rare Justice Leagues storyline that featured the disbanding of the Justice League of America and in it's place, New JLAs were formed. Wonder Woman's Justice League of Amazons, Aquaman's Justice League of Atlantis, Batman's Justice League of Arkham, and Superman and Martian Manhunter's Justice League of Aliens. I kinda took interest of this storyline because I thought the writers had a brilliant concept by using a wordplay on the JLA initials.

JL?, JL Amazons, and JL Atlantis
JL Arkham, JL Aliens, and the return of JL America

All in all Toycon 2012 was huge for me. But just like in the previous Toycons, I missed out on items that I should have bought. I had the mindset of acquiring a Mattel Ghostbusters Box Set but never gave in to my urge to buy one despite seeing the actual product at one of the stalls in Toycon. I also did not buy the Kenner Super Powers Superman that I found because I still kinda despise the price tag. But I think I'll let patience reign in for me. Just like my Toy Hauls at this Toycon, maybe the items that I missed this year would be available next year. I'm definitely looking forward for next year's Toycon. And my hunch is that there's going to be a HUGE SUPERMAN event because the new Superman movie will be release next year, during the month of Toycon. Hope I could contribute again.
